Premium Blends® Natural Health Tip of the Month* The Science of FrutiMax
Our new cranberry dietary supplement
by
Fred Valeriote Ph.d
Urinary tract infection (UTI) represents a major medical problem. Both men and women of all age ranges are affected. Infections can arise seemingly from nowhere. Additionally, wherever catheterizations are necessary, UTI can almost be guaranteed to closely follow the procedure. Catheters are commonly used in hospitals and nursing homes, or among the paralyzed and comatose. Standard treatment for urinary tract and bladder infection is with oral antibiotics such as the fluoroquinolone ciproflacin (Cipro) although kidney infections may require intravenous antibiotic administration.
Whether from fear of drug resistance resulting in chronic recurrence of UTI, financial inability or simple aversion to pharmaceuticals, cranberry has been an alternative treatment for urinary tract infection (UTI) for millions of individuals for decades. It was initially thought that increased urine acidity consequent to cranberry consumption was responsible for the beneficial effect. However, about a decade ago researchers began demonstrating that molecules such as proanthrocyanidins are responsible for the biological effect of cranberries on bacteria that bind to the bladder and urinary tract wall.
The proanthrocyanidins (or PAC's) found in cranberries are different in structure and much more effective than those found in other fruits and berries and is the basis for cranberry’s specific effect. These special molecules act by binding to the receptor sites on the surface of the bacteria. The proanthrocyanadins, specifically in cranberry, act as a blockade to stop the bacteria from attaching to the urinary tract or bladder wall and protect from infection.
The formula that we use in Frutimax contains up to 10 times the total phenolic content (PAC's) found in cranberry concentrate as well as eliminating other potentially interfering compounds. A recent study using the same extract that is found in Frutimax was shown to completely prevent UTI’s in women who were experiencing chronic, recurrent infections.
At American Premium Blends we value your input. If you are interested in becoming part of our focus group to provide us feedback on frutiMAX in exchange for free samples please contact us at info@apblends.com.

GREEN!!! Tips
on how to Go Green!
5 Green Tips for Earth Day and Beyond
It doesn't have to be Earth Day for me to think about how I can make an impact (or less of an impact) on our planet. Here are a few of my favorite tips:
- Lower your thermostat. Buy a programmable thermostat.
- Reuse your water bottle. Avoid buying bottled water. In fact, reuse everything at least once, especially plastics.
- Check out your bathroom. Use low-flow faucets, showerheads, and toilets.
- Start a compost in your back yard or on your rooftop.
- Turn off lights and electronics when you leave the room. Unplug your cell phone charger from the wall when not using it. Turn off energy strips and surge protectors when not in use (especially overnight).
