Premium Blends®: Ways to support the Michigan Economy
Hello Dear Friends,
"If we all spent $10 a week on Michigan products, we could put $36 million every week back into the state's economy".
Jeanne Lipe at the Michigan Agritourist Department confirmed that the numbers were correct (actually they claim $37 million per week).
To find a list of Michigan products that you could find at a local grocery store please visit the Michigan Agricultural Department's website. It is in no way a complete list, but it will get you off to a good start if you should choose to help out. The idea is to shift $10 of your weekly grocery shopping into Michigan products.
There are a lot of Michigan owned grocery stores that are supporting other Michigan businesses on their shelves. Spartan stores are a cooperative, this means that if you buy a Michigan made product from a Spartan affiliated grocery store, you are getting a "triple dip". The product is made in Michigan, the grocery store is independently owned by a Michigan family, and Spartan Stores headquarters is located in Grand Rapids. Other independently owned stores are a "double dip". This includes stores like Randazzo's and Westborn markets. Meijer is based in Grand Rapids, so it also counts as a double dip.
If you think this idea is a good one, and you have friends and family throughout the state who might help out, please forward this email with the lists attached on to them. $36 Million per week could go a long way!

Fruit & Vegetable Benefits
Eating a variety of Fruits & Vegetables everyday
from
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Almost Everyone Needs to Eat More Fruits and Vegetables
A growing body of research shows that fruits and vegetables are critical to promoting good health. To get the amount that's recommended, most people need to increase the amount of fruits and vegetables they currently eat every day. How Many Fruits and Vegetables Do You Need?
Fruits and Vegetables Can Protect Your Health
Fruits and vegetables contain essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber that may help protect you from chronic diseases. Compared with people who consume a diet with only small amounts of fruits and vegetables, those who eat more generous amounts as part of a healthful diet are likely to have reduced risk of chronic diseases, including stroke and perhaps other cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers.

Whole Foods or Supplements?
Nutrients should come primarily from foods. Foods such as fruits and vegetables contain not only the vitamins and minerals that are often found in supplements, but also other naturally occurring substances that may help protect you from chronic diseases.
For some people, fortified foods or supplements can be helpful in getting the nutrients their bodies need. A fortified food contains a nutrient in an amount greater than what is typically found in that food.
Fruits and Vegetables and Weight Management
Substituting fruits and vegetables for higher-calorie foods can be part of a weight loss strategy. Read more on CDC's page How to Use Fruits and Vegetables to Help Manage Your Weight.
Fruits and Vegetables on the Go!
Busy lives can benefit from food that's nutritious, yet easy to eat on-the-go, like fresh fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are a natural source of energy and give the body many nutrients you need to keep going.
The Colors of Health
Fruits and vegetables come in terrific colors and flavors, but their real beauty lies in what's inside. Fruits and vegetables are great sources of many vitamins, minerals and other natural substances that may help protect you from chronic diseases.
To get a healthy variety, think color. Eating fruits and vegetables of different colors gives your body a wide range of valuable nutrients, like fiber, folate, potassium, and vitamins A and C. Some examples include green spinach, orange sweet potatoes, black beans, yellow corn, purple plums, red watermelon, and white onions. For more variety, try new fruits and vegetables regularly.
View a chart that lists specific nutrients and tells you how these nutrients contribute to good health. You can also find out which fruits and vegetables are good and excellent sources of these nutrients.

GOING GREEN!!!
Tips on how to Go Green!

Dishwashers vs hand washing
Green Living Tips, 2008
Dishwashers - a greener choice?
Much has changed in dishwashers in recent years - they use less water, less juice; are lighter, whisper quiet and far less obtrusive.. and they actually clean the dishes.
We recently purchased a new dishwasher after a lengthy interlude between machines. Needless to say, the family were keen on getting another dishwasher after 2 years without one. I managed to avoid the chore by washing dishes by hand badly. Did I do it on purpose? I'll never tell.
I've been really impressed with the model that was chosen by the family. It has a 3.5 Star energy rating (266 kWh per year) and a 4 Star water rating (13.6 Litres per wash - about 3.6 gallons). It takes care of the dishes for a day for a family of four in a single cycle.
