American Premium Blends® Blueprint for a Fruitful & Healthy 2008!

Hello Dear Friends,

The New Year is a great time to start new habits. If one of your resolutions is to eat healthier and lose weight like millions of other Americans, we are happy to say we can support those goals with our healthy line of deliscious concentrates!

The difficult part is actually following through on the plan.

Here are five tips to assist your eating decisions toward a healthy lifestyle.

  1. Know your fats.
Try to eliminate trans-fats; make an effort to reduce your intake of saturated fats; increase your consumption of unsaturated fats like those found in raw nuts, avocado and extra virgin olive oil.
  2. Eat 5 servings of fruit a day.
Our all natural line will help you meet this goal!
  3. Eliminate artificial sweeteners.
Try local honey, dates, natural applesauce or raw, brown, unprocessed sugar
  4. Switch to sea salt.
If it is white, the "good stuff" has been bleached out. Look for gray or brown Celtic sea salt where the process used to draw the salt from the sea has not changed in 2000 years.
  5. Eat a varied and colorful diet.
The more colors of the rainbow on your plate the better for your health.
Of course, these tips can really be summed up as: Eat whole foods!

Not every bite needs to conform to this rule, but the more that do, the better you’ll look and feel.

Natural Health Tip of the Month*

Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate
by Russell Betts Ph.D

In this article we will discuss glucosamine and chondroitin supplementation for people suffering with osteoarthritis.

What is Arthritis?
Arthritis is a condition involving joint pain, swelling, impaired movement and a decrease in the quality of life. Arthritis affects the lives of 33% of all Americans, typically affecting women more then men and is the leading cause of disability in the United States. The Center for Disease Control estimates that arthritis costs $125 billion annually for medical expenses and lost productivity. There are three common types or arthritis:

  • osteoarthritis a condition associated with wearing of the joint due to age or physical injury
  • rheumatoid arthritis which is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the joints
  • psoriatic arthritis which is an auto-immune condition afflicting 20% of people with a skin condition know as Psoriasis
What is glucosamine?

Structure of glucosamine

Glucosamine is a naturally occurring chemical found the shells of clams, oysters and other shellfish. It is a member of a class of chemicals called the amino sugars and is known to be a building block of the glycosaminoglycans (such as chondroitin) found in the cartilage that protects joints from wearing. Glucosamine is manufactured commercially through extraction from shellfish typically as glucosamine sulfate or glucosamine chloride.

What is chondroitin?

Structure of Chondroitine

Chondroitin belongs to a family of glycosaminoglycans which make up a large part of cartilage. Structurally Chondroitin is linear chain of the sugars D-galactosamine and D-glucuronic acid in a repeating sequence.

Why Glucosamine and Chondroitin?
Glucosamine is thought to be valuable to joints because it is a component of the cartilage matrix glycosaminoglycans that serve the joints by providing cushioning. Glusoamine is also found in the synovial fluid, which lubricates and cushions joints during movement and is precursors in the generation of proteoglycans. Proteoglycans are the filler material between cells and are thought to be critical in joint health because it allows cartilage to collect and retain water, enabling the formation of an elastic layer. Chondroitin promotes cartilage tissue generation and attracts fluid into the cartilage, making it more shock absorbent.

What about Clinical Trials?
Recently in the New England Journal of Medicine a multiple area, double blind, placebo and pharmaceutical drug controlled study of glucosamine and chondroitin was published. There findings showed that patients with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis taking a mixture of 500 mg of glucosamine plus 400 mg of chondroitin three times a day had a significantly (24.9%) better result than patients taking placebo. It was also found that taking glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate or a pharmaceutical alone were 11.4%, 7.1%, and 15,1% better than placebo, respectively. These results were not considered statistically significant even for the pharmaceutical drug. The authors of this article state that weakness in there paper are the relatively high positive outcome for patients taking placebo as well as the inclusion of individuals with mild pain could have limited there ability to detect benefits. However, even with these weaknesses it is interesting to note that in all cases there was an increased percent of patiets seeing a benefit from taking glucosamine, chondroitin or a combination.

We recommend that you take your glucosamine with American Premium Blends Tart Cherry Concentrate or with American Premium Blends Cherry Harvest.
